Trying to stay in the Moment

January 28-April 10

So, I wasn’t posting because I was having radiation and chemo for cancer, which was, as you might expect, not a very fun time. I am so blessed to have such wonderful family and friends, and this love sustained during a pretty awful time. We took the Bus to my first day of treatment, hence the photo, but after that it was friends and the Prius. I now know every way to get to Kaiser Sunset from my house!

I finished radiation and chemo on March 3rd, my mother’s birthday and the day my father (the original Bus driver) died last year, so it was a day that felt portentous, but what it actually ended up as was kind of sweet: we bought fancy donuts at Donut Friend to thank the team that checks you in for radiation—a relentlessly positive force—and then to thank the folks on my radiation care team. After it was all over, I rang the famous bell! (videos embedded at end). After that Robert drove us across town to the Huntington Gardens, where we had a lovely lunch at the Chinese restaurant, listening to the water in the ponds, and then met up with my mother-in-law so I could ring the bell again on the bridge over the ponds (again, video at end), and all the turtles came to see me, which I thought was an obvious good omen.

The next weeks were incredibly awful, about which the less said the better, and now I am starting to feel almost human again, but the journey will continue. We are taking the Bus on an adventure very soon, so there may be some Bus/trip blogging, and then it sounds like I will be having more aggressive chemo and maybe surgery, but the outcome is likely good. One phrase I didn’t know before starting this cancer sojourn was “treating for cure,” but it is one that makes me happy every time a doctor says it, so that is my goal.

Thank you to all who helped with rides, cards, emotional support: you are all amazing, and I can never thank you enough!

So happy!

I am SOOOOO very ecstatically happy for you!!! I received your beautiful card yesterday. You always amaze with your generosity, your love and your creativity. I am going to forward you an email from a very good friend about art as activism next Saturday. I’ve been wanting to connect the two of you! You are the perfect person for his ideas. As an aside, he is also the person (whose email I forwarded to you) who has survived cancer for 28 years, and counting.

A couple of friends and I were thinking about going to the gorgeous Hindu temple in Chino Hills next Sunday (Easter). It would be so cool if you and Robert could join us. I would love to see you! XO Lollie Ragana
